Taxi Driver Jailed for Stealing S$200,000 in Luxury Watches

Taxi driver Michael Raj was sentenced to 17 months in jail on 30 July 2024 after pleading guilty to one charge of theft in a dwelling and three theft charges.

He stole three Rolex watches worth more than S$200,000 in total from passengers who had fallen asleep in his taxi. The thefts took place in September and October 2022 and June 2023.

Michael also stole 13 sets of jewellery worth S$43,392.50 from his mother between May and June 2021. He pawned the jewellery and used the money to pay debts.

One of the stolen watches was recovered and returned to its owner. His mother also redeemed five sets of jewellery, while Michael had made about S$3,000 in partial restitution by the time of sentencing.
