Tour operators said in August 2024 that North Korea planned to reopen Samjiyon to foreign tourists from December that year. Reuters reported the announcement after Koryo Tours and KTG Tours received information from their local partners.
North Korea had largely closed its borders to international visitors in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic. Samjiyon, near the Chinese border, was expected to be the first destination offered to tour groups.
The announcement did not amount to a guarantee that every planned trip would proceed. Travellers needed to check current entry rules, tour availability and government travel advisories before making arrangements.
